ABOUT COASTAL SOUNDS CHOIR ASSOCIATION

The Coastal Sounds Choir Association is a not-for-profit choral organization based in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Mission of the Coastal Sounds Choir Association is to promote choral singing in Conception Bay South and surrounding areas by offering a variety of singing  opportunities to the community. Our belief is that everyone can sing and that sharing song with others is good for the body, mind and soul! We hope you will consider joining one or more of our projects and we look forward to seeing you soon.

OUR CHOIRS

The Coastal Sounds Community Choir, conducted by Abra Whitney, originally formed in January 2007 as a project of The Music Corner in Manuels, Conception Bay South. In 2011, the choir branched off as its own non-profit community organization, ran by an elected Executive Committee. Having begun with just eight brave souls, regular membership has grown to between 50-60 singers with new members joining each year. The choir is comprised of members living in the Conception Bay South and surrounding areas and all come from different musical backgrounds and experiences.

Coastal Sounds holds at least two concerts each season and performs at various special events, fundraisers, retirement homes and Church services throughout the year. It has taken part in Rotary and Kiwanis Music Festivals and has performed in various venues in Conception Bay South and surrounding communities. The choir invites new members to join in September and January. No prior singing experience is necessary and all people enthusiastic about singing and who are willing to learn are welcome to join.

Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm and Thursdays from 10:00-12:00pm at St. John the Evangelist Church in Conception Bay South.

The Aurora Women's Choir, conducted by Abra Whitney, was formed in September 2014 as part of the CSCA's expansion. Aurora is an auditioned ensemble that performs both a cappella and accompanied repertoire of all styles and in all languages. Having grown out of a desire to challenge the singer in a smaller chamber choir setting, Aurora seeks to master a range of choral music with a focus on Canadian repertoire. The choir holds at least two concerts and a fundraiser each season and performs at various special events, shared concerts, workshops, festivals and Church services throughout the year. Prospective members are invited to audition.

Aurora had the distinct pleasure of representing Newfoundland at the National Unisong Choral Festival and at the 100th Anniversary Beaumont-Hamel Commemoration in Ottawa. They have been proud to perform at both Canada Day and Remembrance Day Ceremonies for the Town of Conception Bay South. In Spring 2018 Aurora was invited to perform in a special Equinox Concert at the Manuels River Centre, sharing the stage with the Young Virtuosi of the Suzuki Talent Education Program. Aurora was also proud to support the opening Gala for Teen Challenge NL, a residential addictions rehabilitation c centre for women. In July 2018, Aurora participated in the National Choral Conference and Festival, Podium on the Edge in St. John's.

Rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings at Topsail United Church in Topsail, CBS.
